Brazil, formally known as the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the biggest nation in both South and Central America. Brazil is the seventh most populated nation in the world and the fifth-largest country by size, with an area of 8.5 million square kilometers. The most populated city is So Paulo, and its capital is Brasilia. The Federal District and the union of the 26 states make up the federation. Due to more than a century of widespread immigration from all over the world, it is the largest nation with Portuguese as an official language and the only one in the Americas. It is also the largest nation with a majority of Roman Catholics.
